Pickens County Library Announces Delay of Renovation and Expansion Project

Sequoyah Regional Library System (SRLS) has announced that the Pickens County Library, which has undergone renovation and expansion since summer of 2021, is projected to reopen to the public in 2023. Although a projected December 2022 reopening of the building was previously announced in September, supply chain issues and lead times have caused a delay in the construction project’s original completion window. Operation of the temporary Pickens Grab & Go library location at West Church Street, as well as the Pickens County Library’s fall/winter event calendar and programming schedule, will continue unaffected by this delay.

“We share our community’s anticipation and excitement for the reopening of the new and improved Pickens County Library building”, says Angela Cortellino, Executive Director of SRLS. “We are sorry to announce a slight delay to 2023 for the completed renovation and expansion of our Pickens County Library. To ensure the new building can deliver the optimal library experience for the entire Pickens County community, the entire development team is continuing to work diligently on the completion of this project”.

During construction, Pickens County Library will continue to offer programming at Pickens County Recreation Department and other off-site locations this fall and winter. Upcoming events include weekly storytimes, a celebration of Native American heritage with Funk Heritage Center, monthly book club gatherings at Pendley Creek Brewing Company, and the annual Polar Express celebration featuring Santa Claus at Chattahoochee Tech this holiday season. Regular service hours and programming schedules at other SRLS locations in Cherokee and Gilmer Counties will not be affected by the Pickens County Library construction delay.

The Pickens County Library building, located at 100 Library Lane, is closed to the public while construction is underway. While the library is closed, a temporary, limited-service library location called “Pickens Grab & Go” is available inside the Mountain Education Charter High School building, located at 339 West Church Street. At Pickens Grab & Go, library patrons are able to check out and return materials, place and pick up library holds, request interlibrary loans, pay fines, and browse a selection of items from the library’s collection. Two express computer stations are available for users to access Wi-Fi, print, and make copies.

The Pickens County Library renovation and expansion project is being handled by Hogan Construction Group. Pickens Project Update 12.17.21

Hogan Construction Group mobilized on site in late November. The project start was delayed due to supply chain delays in the steel industry. Hogan has completed the interior demolition work, most of the grading, and about 50% of the site work. The next steps are to relocate utility lines, complete exterior grading, and pour footings for the addition.

How long will this project take? What are the renovations and expansions for?

The Pickens County Library will be renovating and expanding its facilities through 2023. The project includes a renovation of the Pickens County Library building, originally built in 1996. The library’s current 10,800 square feet will be expanded and 8,200 square feet will be added.

With an expanded and renovated library facility, the Pickens community will have more space for books and technology; larger areas for programs, meetings, collaboration, and creation; and additional seating for study and quiet reading.

How is the library paying for these renovations and expansions?

Partial funding of $1,800,000 for this project is available from Pickens County’s SPLOST program. To fund the remaining portion, the Sequoyah Regional Library System (SRLS) applied to the State for a $2,000,000 Capital Outlay Grant, administered by the Georgia Public Library Service. These grants are funded by the sale of bonds and must be approved by the state legislature. The Capital Outlay Grant for the Pickens County Library’s renovation and expansion was approved for the fiscal year of 2021.
