Public Services Specialist – Woodstock Public Library

(Full-time, 40 hours per week)


In addition to circulation assistance, the Public Service Specialist organizes library services for adults, including information assistance, collection services and programming. This positon also works with branch staff to provide family and all age’s services. The Public Service Specialist interacts directly with the public to provide quality customer service.  This frontline position anticipates and meets the needs of users in the most visible way. Fully supported by all of the other sectors and departments, they work to provide the best possible programs and services to the library community.

Salary & Benefits:          

$22,454 Annually, Paid Annual Leave, Sick Leave & Holidays. State Health Benefit Plan, Flexible Benefits and Teacher Retirement System.



Full-Time, 40 hours per week. Schedule includes a combination of daytime, evening, and weekend hours. This library is open 7 days a week. Work schedule will vary and flexibility is required.



  • Design, implement and evaluate a variety of programs and services that provide opportunities  for information, entertainment, and lifelong learning.
  • Proactively interact with the public to ascertain what they need and ensure that they find it, conducting reference              interviews and information searches as needed. This can include Genealogical research.
  • Demonstrate ability to meet the information seeking needs of users, informing about available resources.                                                 
  • Guide and assist the public in the use of library resources and technology, using technology skills to assist patrons in using and troubleshooting computers, software, and electronic devices.
  • Actively seeks opportunities to promote adult services in the local community and participates  in outreach and marketing events.
  • Utilize promotional techniques, displaying and marketing materials to be attractive and enjoyable to the public, as well as convenient to use.                                                      
  • Promote awareness of public services to other staff members.
  • Assist at the service desk and provides staff support as needed.                                       


High School Diploma or equivalent.

Experience working with the public and/or customer service field experience preferred.

Previous experience working in a library setting is preferred.

Skills & Abilities:          

Customer service experience and strong technology skills.            

Flexibility to work independently and collaborate with others; operate job-related                                                                            equipment; problem solving; meet, communicate and deal with people effectively.

Physical Requirements:

Must be able to stand and/or sit for prolonged periods of time; lift boxes and crates of  no more than 30 lbs.; move and manipulate inventory; frequent stooping, kneeling and crouching.
