Service Associate (PT) – Pickens County Library About the Role This position is central to customer service, providing timely assistance to the public and responding to a variety of requests. This frontline position anticipates and meets the needs of users in the most visible way. This position also aids in maintaining the materials collection. Fully supported by all of the other sectors and departments, they work to provide quality customer service to the library community. Individuals in this position can expect to spend 60% of their time assisting the public from a library service desk and 40% of their time assisting with circulation/collection maintenance. Location: Pickens County Library, 100 Library Lane, Jasper, GA 30143 Salary & Benefits: $12.00 per hour Schedule: Part-Time, 17 hours per week. Work schedule will vary and flexibility is required. Schedule will include a combination of day, evening and weekend hours. This library is open 7 days a week. Responsibilities: Assist at the service desk and provide staff support as needed. Use of library automation system and implementing circulation procedures. Understand and perform circulation operations for all library materials. Understand and perform procedures for shelving, shifting and shelf reading. Assist the public in locating, selecting, and using resources. Proactively interact with the public to ascertain what they need and ensure they find it. Ensure proper order of books, and neat orderly appearance of public areas. Enter data in library automation system or other software, maintaining confidential records and circulation databases. Handle financial transactions, count money and make change accurately. Qualifications: Requires High School Diploma or equivalent. 1 year job related experience; preferably working with the public in a customer service or retail field. Bilingual ability is a plus in serving a diverse community. Skills & Abilities: Basic computer skills including the ability to type, operate a computer and navigate the internet. Ability to perform basic math; understand and follow written and oral instructions. Ability to work with others in a variety of circumstances; to deal tactfully with staff and the public; to communicate effectively with supervisor, staff and the public. Ability to understand and perform library procedures. Physical Requirements: Must be able to stand and/or sit for prolonged periods of time; lift boxes and crates of no more than 30 lbs.; move and manipulate inventory; frequent stooping, kneeling and crouching. SRLS News Hickory Flat Public Library Grand Opening & Ribbon Cutting July 26, 2024 Sequoyah Regional Library System (SRLS) celebrated the official opening of the Hickory Flat Public Library on Thursday, July 25, with a Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony hosted by the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce. “This library is all about people and spaces,” says Angela Cortellino, Executive Director of SRLS. “We still have books, with better browsing. We still have technology. But what you will find in here are some unique spaces. These spaces are meant for people to gather. For people to meet. For people to connect, explore, discover.” Speakers in attendance included Pam Carnes, Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce President and CEO, and Library Trustee, Eric Rein, Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce Chair, and Library Trustee, Tom Hill, Chair of the Cherokee County Library Board and Sequoyah Regional Library System Board, and Commissioner Richard Weatherby. With an expanded and renovated library facility, the Sequoyah Regional Library System community will have more space for books and technology; larger areas for programs, meetings, collaboration, and creation; and additional seating for study and quiet reading. Teens Resources For Teens Events for Teens Click Here To View Full Calendar Teen Volunteer Opportunities at the Library Are you a student who... is in 6th - 12th grade, or will be in the fall? lives in Cherokee, Pickens, or Gilmer county? wants to volunteer at the library? Whether you are interested in applying to be an appointed member of the Teen Advisory Board (TAB) or would like the flexibility of volunteering when you can, the Sequoyah Regional Library offers volunteer opportunities for all interested 6th - 12th grade students who live in Cherokee, Pickens, and Gilmer counties. The Teen Advisory Board (TAB) application opens every year in mid-April and closes mid-May. Appointed TAB members attend monthly meetings and events, plan and lead library programs, and complete volunteer hours. During this application period, all rising 6th - 12th grade students who reside in Cherokee, Pickens, and Gilmer counties are eligible and encouraged to apply. Teen Advisory Board Application The Auxiliary Teen Advisory Board (TAB) application is open year-round to all interested 6th - 12th grade students who reside in Cherokee, Pickens, and Gilmer counties. Auxiliary TAB is meant to provide a flexible opportunity for a student to volunteer when it fits their schedule and does not include mandatory meetings or a minimum volunteer hour requirement. < Back Sequoyah Regional Library System Receives Great Stories Grant Jul 5, 2023 The Sequoyah Regional Library System has been selected by the American Library Association (ALA), with support from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) as one of 58 libraries to receive implementation grants for the Great Stories Club, a thematic reading and discussion program for underserved teens. The two awarded grants include “Deeper Than Our Skins: The Present Is a Conversation with the Past” and “Finding Your Voice: Speaking Truth to Power”. As part of the Great Stories Club, staff from SRLS will work with a small group of teens to read and discuss stories that explore questions of race, equity, identity and history. The titles were selected to inspire young people — especially those facing difficult circumstances or challenges — to consider “big questions” about the world around them and their place in it. SRLS will receive two $500 programming stipends, one per theme, and 11 copies of each of the selected books. The books will be gifted to the book club participants. Since 2006, ALA’s Great Stories Club has helped libraries engage young adults with accessible, thought-provoking literature. Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce Education Committee, in partnership with Enjoy Cherokee Magazine and WLJA 101.1 FM, has donated $1,000 to Sequoyah Regional Library System SRLS News $1,000 Donation from the Retired Educator Recognition Initiative May 17, 2024 The Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce Education Committee, in partnership with Enjoy Cherokee Magazine and WLJA 101.1 FM, has donated $1,000 to Sequoyah Regional Library System in recognition of retiring educators from the Cherokee County School District. The donation will be used to purchase materials for the library locations in Cherokee county.

The Sequoyah Regional Library System in partnership with the Master Gardeners in Cherokee & Gilmer Counties offer seed libraries. Seed Libraries The Sequoyah Regional Library System in partnership with the Master Gardeners in Cherokee & Gilmer Counties offer seed libraries. Seed libraries are at the following locations: Rose Creek Public Library Hickory Flat Library Ball Ground Public Library Gilmer County Library Woodstock Public Library The seed libraries are free to the public and allows borrowers to “check out” vegetable, herb and flower seeds. When seeds are checked out from the seed library, a form is completed. The seed libraries were started in order to encourage the community’s interest in home gardening. Seed saving is a tradition that allows for the selection and perpetuation of plants that have a particular value to a gardener. Saving the seeds of favorite plants for further use contributes to the biodiversity of local communities and connects family generations.

Featuring colorful books and vibrant plants, Katie May says the inspiration for the color palette came directly from the library’s interior colors. Featuring colorful books and vibrant plants, Katie May says the inspiration for the color palette came directly from the library’s interior colors. “The color scheme is exactly mirrored from the indoor space of this library,” says Katie. “I really wanted to reflect the same sort of modern, clean-line feel.” The mural was completed over the summer and was inspired by Katie May’s love for reading and desire to give back to the library in her community. The mural also features a few hidden personal touches, such as a blue ribbon honoring a friend of the artist’s who passed and a heart at the request of her youngest daughter. “It is wonderful to see the library reflected in a creative way outside of our four walls,” says Angela Cortellino, Executive Director of Sequoyah Regional Library System. “We really appreciate the time and talent of Katie and are so glad she was willing to share this with the community.” Hickory Flat Public Library is one of seven library locations for Sequoyah Regional Library System. SRLS is not responsible for mailed, faxed, or emailed exams not received by the college, institution or business. Proctoring Fee: $20.00 per test, payment due before testing, must be cash or card. SRLS Proctors agree to: Verify the student’s identity with a photo ID. Supervise the exam by having the student take the test in a study room or table near their desk. There might not be a private testing area available. Provide space for test-taking. However, there may not be a separate study room available. Sign paperwork and seal the envelope of the finished exam and call for it to be picked up. Staff will not deliver exams to the post office or Fedex/UPS store. Staff will not provide letters or telephone calls to the school to confirm receipt. A reply to an exam received by email will serve as confirmation and receipt. SRLS proctors are not responsible for keeping copies of completed exams. Provide a computer to complete most online testing. SRLS accepts no responsibility for internet connections and outages that may occur. We cannot install any software on our computers. Tests must be completely web-based. The test taker agrees to: Contact the library to schedule an exam with the Public Service Specialist. Appointments should be made at least 24 hours in advance. Proctoring is available only during regular hours when sufficient staff is available. Tests must be completed 30 minutes prior to closing. Verify with library staff that the library and proctor meet the requirements of the school/institution. Verify that the physical environment at the library meets your test-taking needs. Pay proctoring fees in cash or by credit card before the test can be taken. Pay fee for each individual test, including retaking a test. Provide photo identification to verify identity before taking the test. Pay for postage and other expenses incurred, such as photocopying or printing. Copying/printing: $0.15 per page.
